In the small town of Wellington, Colorado, a tragedy unfolded that left a community in mourning. Maria Olivas, a 38-year-old woman, was killed by gun violence on February 6, 2014. Born in the nearby city of Fort Collins on May 7, 1975, Maria was a familiar and friendly face to many in Wellington.
Maria was a graduate of Poudre High School, class of 1993. She had built a life in the Fort Collins area, eventually settling in Wellington where she was raising her three children.
Many in the community knew her from her job at Cantina Liquors, where her warm personality and infectious laugh left a lasting impression on those she met. She cherished her family, enjoying camping trips, watching movies, and their regular Sunday family meals.
Her sudden and violent death was a profound loss for her loved ones. She was survived by her four children, her ex-husband, her parents, and her siblings, as well as a wide circle of friends and extended family. Described as a lover and rescuer of animals, her family requested that donations be made to the Larimer County Humane Society in her honor. Despite the passage of time, publicly available information regarding any arrests or suspects in connection with her death remains undisclosed.
