In the small town of Ignacio, Colorado, the life of 27-year-old Jake Bramwell was cut short on April 14, 2015. A man known for his love of the cowboy lifestyle, bull riding, and a tremendous heart that brought smiles to those around him, Bramwell was fatally shot several times at his home in the Sky Ute Downs RV Park. The incident, which shattered the morning's quiet, stemmed from a disagreement with another La Plata County resident.
The man identified as the shooter was 33-year-old Joel
Ferguson. The two men were acquainted with each other, and their dispute escalated into a violent confrontation at Bramwell's residence. After shooting Bramwell, Ferguson fled the scene in his pickup truck. The community was left in shock, mourning the loss of a man described as a hard-working and well-known figure in town.
Approximately fifteen minutes after the shooting was reported, a Bayfield Marshal's deputy pulled over Ferguson's vehicle. In a tragic turn of events, as the officer initiated the traffic stop, Ferguson exited his truck and took his own life with a handgun. Investigators later found two handguns in his truck. The case was ultimately determined to be a murder-suicide, and with the death of the sole suspect, no arrests were made. The community was left to grieve both losses and grapple with the sudden violence that had unfolded.
