In the late afternoon of October 30, 2017, a dispute in a parking lot in Centennial, Colorado, tragically escalated, ending the life of 30-year-old Adolf Arellano. Arellano, a male, was with his girlfriend at an apartment complex in the 300 block of East Highline Circle to collect money from a woman. An argument ensued, and as Arellano and his girlfriend were leaving in their vehicle, the woman followed them and shot Arellano in the stomach. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation quickly focused on a female suspect, initially described as having purple hair. The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office identified the suspect as 34-year-old Jacqueline Yvonne Lucero and issued a warrant for her arrest. Investigators made it clear that they did not believe the shooting was a random act and that Lucero and Arellano knew each other. For a week, Lucero remained at large, and law enforcement cautioned the public that she was considered armed and dangerous.
A week after the fatal shooting, authorities located Lucero. When officers attempted to apprehend her, she fled in a vehicle, leading them on a high-speed chase through parts of Denver, unincorporated Arapahoe County, and Aurora. The pursuit ended when Lucero crashed her car near East Alameda Avenue and South Potomac Street. She then attempted to flee on foot but was quickly captured by officers. Lucero was subsequently charged in connection with Arellano's death.
In February 2019, an Arapahoe County jury found Jacqueline Yvonne Lucero guilty of second-degree murder, vehicle eluding, and possession of a weapon by a previous offender. The court learned that the argument leading to the shooting was over money. In April of that year, a judge sentenced Lucero to 50 years in prison for her role in the death of Adolf Arellano.
