In the pre-dawn hours of New Year's Eve 2017, the quiet of a Highlands Ranch, Colorado, apartment complex was shattered by a verbal disturbance call that would soon escalate into a tragedy. Among the Douglas County Sheriff's deputies who responded to the Copper Canyon Apartments was 29-year-old Zackari Parrish, a dedicated officer, husband, and father of two young children. The male subject of the call, Matthew Riehl, had a history of erratic behavior and had been posting increasingly agitated videos online. Deputies had been to the apartment earlier that morning but left after finding no evidence of a crime.
When a second call came in around 5:15 a.m. regarding a domestic disturbance, Parrish and his fellow deputies returned. They attempted to speak with Riehl, who was described as emotionally disturbed. The situation quickly deteriorated as Riehl barricaded himself inside a bedroom. As the deputies tried to place him on a mental health hold and entered the apartment, Riehl unleashed a torrent of gunfire through his bedroom door in what was described as an ambush-style attack. He fired over 100 rounds from a rifle, creating a chaotic and perilous scene.
In the ensuing violence, Deputy Parrish was struck multiple times. An autopsy would later reveal he was hit 11 times. Three other deputies and a Castle Rock police officer who responded with a SWAT team were also wounded, as were two civilians in the vicinity. Despite the grave danger, fellow officers attempted to rescue the downed Parrish, but the continuous gunfire made it impossible to reach him. The standoff continued for hours until a regional SWAT team was able to make entry into the apartment.
In the final confrontation, Matthew Riehl was shot and killed by law enforcement. Tragically, Zackari Parrish succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The suspect, a 37-year-old veteran, was the sole perpetrator and was killed at the scene, meaning no arrests were made in connection with the shooting. The incident left a community in mourning and a law enforcement agency grieving the loss of a brave officer who was remembered by his colleagues as being passionate about his work and deeply committed to serving his community.
