In what began as a dispute between teenage friends, 16-year-old Jeremy Jamaal Rudolph, a male student at Colorado Early College, was tragically killed. The incident unfolded on March 18, 2019, near the intersection of East 6th Avenue and Sable Boulevard in Aurora, Colorado. What started as a disagreement, stemming from one student pushing another, escalated with fatal consequences.
On that Monday, shortly after 11:30 a.m., Jeremy was with a group of his friends near Tollgate Creek when
they encountered another group that included Edgar Hernandez-Flores. An ongoing dispute between the two groups came to a head when Hernandez-Flores produced a gun and fired 14 rounds at Jeremy and his friends. One of the bullets struck Jeremy in the head. First responders found him unresponsive in the parking lot of the Sable Technological Center and transported him to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The Arapahoe County Coroner's Office later confirmed his death as a homicide caused by a single gunshot wound to the head.
A significant investigation involving the Aurora Police Department, the local FBI branch, Aurora SWAT, and the Aurora police K-9 unit led to the arrest of a suspect nearly 31 hours later. On the evening of March 19, 2019, Edgar Hernandez-Flores, who was a juvenile at the time of the shooting, was taken into custody without incident in the 15000 block of East Evans Avenue.
Edgar Hernandez-Flores, who was 18 at the time of his sentencing, pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder on May 24, 2021. As part of a plea agreement, other charges were dismissed. On September 16, 2021, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the death of Jeremy Jamaal Rudolph, bringing a legal conclusion to a senseless act of violence that cut a young life short.
