In the winter of 2022, the community of Pueblo, Colorado, was shaken by the tragic death of 26-year-old Tyler West. A beloved instrumental music teacher at Pueblo South High School, West's life was cut short on December 22 in what police would later describe as a murder-suicide.
On that Thursday, officers from the Pueblo Police Department were dispatched to a business located on the 4100 block of North Elizabeth Street following reports of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, they discovered the bodies of two men, one of whom was later identified as Tyler West. The initial investigation at the scene suggested a murder-suicide, a grim conclusion that would later be confirmed.
The other deceased individual was identified as 38-year-old Derek Reis of Wyoming. According to the police investigation, it was determined that Reis was the perpetrator who shot and killed West before taking his own life. As a result of this conclusion, no other suspects were sought, and no arrests were made in connection with the case. The Pueblo County Coroner officially released the names of both West and Reis to the public.
The news of Tyler West's untimely death sent ripples of grief through the Pueblo District 60 community. Having joined the music program at South High School in 2021, West had quickly become a respected and cherished figure among both students and staff. He was remembered for his vibrant personality and engaging teaching style. In the wake of the tragedy, the school district arranged for a crisis team and counseling services to be available to support those affected by the loss.
