On the evening of May 25, 2019, in Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico, a White/Caucasian male named Christopher Williams, age 40, offered a ride to a younger man, setting in motion a tragic sequence of events that would end his life. Williams had left his mother and stepfather's home to take 21-year-old Travis Nolan to a gas station. However, their journey took a fatal turn in the 100 block of Glade Drive.
It was there that the Ruidoso Police Department would later respond to multiple 911 calls about a man who had been shot and was deceased.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered Christopher Williams' body, bearing several gunshot wounds. The investigation that followed revealed a grim narrative of betrayal and violence. Investigators learned that Nolan had used a 12-gauge shotgun to shoot Williams three times while he was in the cab of his own truck. After fatally wounding Williams, Nolan removed him from the vehicle and fled the scene in the victim's truck, heading towards Arizona. In an attempt to conceal his crime, Nolan disposed of the stolen truck, which was later found burned in Tucson, Arizona, on May 27, 2019. The damage from the fire was so extensive that the vehicle could not be positively identified until December 2022.
The investigation into Christopher Williams' death led to the arrest of Travis Nolan in Ruidoso on June 4, 2019. He was subsequently charged with the murder. Nolan's trial commenced in Carrizozo on March 6, 2023, and featured testimony from 28 different witnesses for the prosecution. In a surprising turn, Nolan himself took the stand and admitted to killing Williams, burning his truck, and disposing of the shotgun. On March 10, 2023, after deliberating for only two hours, a Lincoln County jury found Travis Nolan guilty of First Degree Murder, Armed Robbery, and Tampering with Evidence. For his crimes, Nolan faced a sentence of life imprisonment plus 30 years.
