In Albuquerque, New Mexico, on February 23, 2023, the life of 48-year-old Hispanic male Yoel Rodriguez came to a tragic and violent end in a North Valley townhome. His death was the final act in a devastating sequence of events that also claimed the lives of two other people. Authorities determined that Rodriguez was the suspect in a double murder that preceded his own death by suicide.
The victims were his former long-term girlfriend, 36-year-old Danay Morales-Hernandez, and her new acquaintance, 25-year-old Omar Rodriguez-Hechemendia.
The tragic story began to unfold when Rodriguez, who had recently separated from Morales-Hernandez, discovered she was in a new relationship. He traveled from Las Vegas, Nevada, to the Albuquerque home where Morales-Hernandez lived with their two daughters. On that fateful morning, after Rodriguez-Hechemendia had taken one of the children to school, Rodriguez entered the residence and brutally stabbed Morales-Hernandez multiple times. Tragically, her two-year-old daughter was present at the scene when police later arrived.
When Omar Rodriguez-Hechemendia returned, he too was attacked by Yoel Rodriguez, who stabbed him repeatedly and also attempted to shoot him. Despite his severe injuries, Rodriguez-Hechemendia managed to escape the home and collapsed in the street, where he was found by passing motorists who called for help. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead.
Inside the home, law enforcement officers made a grim discovery. Yoel Rodriguez was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The investigation into the incident revealed a troubled history between Rodriguez and Morales-Hernandez. Family members disclosed a long history of domestic violence, including a recent incident just months prior where Rodriguez had been arrested and charged for shooting at Morales-Hernandez. However, she had chosen not to cooperate with prosecutors and had dropped a restraining order against him, reportedly because she did not want the father of her children to be imprisoned. As Yoel Rodriguez was the perpetrator of the murders and died by suicide, no arrests were made in connection with this case.
