On the night of June 26, 2021, 34-year-old Domonique 'Monique' Gonzales was fatally shot outside a residence in the 400 block of East Forest Street in Roswell, New Mexico. Roswell police responded to reports of gunfire around 10:40 p.m. and discovered Gonzales deceased near the front door of the home.
Investigators quickly identified Gonzales's ex-boyfriend, 25-year-old Christopher Nathan Beltran, as the primary suspect.
Beltran had been released from prison just four days prior to the incident. Authorities believed he was upset over the possibility of Gonzales being involved in a new relationship. An arrest warrant was issued for Beltran on charges including first-degree murder, tampering with evidence, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Beltran was subsequently apprehended and faced legal proceedings. In September 2022, he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in connection with Gonzales's death. As part of the plea agreement, charges of tampering with evidence and felon in possession of a firearm were dismissed. In February 2023, Beltran was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the murder of his ex-girlfriend.
The case drew significant attention due to Beltran's recent release from prison prior to the murder. Discussions arose regarding the monitoring of inmate communications, as it was revealed that Beltran had made threatening phone calls to Gonzales before his release, which were not reviewed by authorities at the time.
Gonzales's death highlighted concerns about the effectiveness of monitoring released offenders and the potential risks posed to individuals involved in prior relationships with them. The tragedy underscored the importance of addressing systemic issues within the criminal justice system to prevent similar incidents in the future.
