On a tragic day in Roswell, New Mexico, 3-year-old Idaleigh Villegas-Hernandez, a young Hispanic girl, became a victim of a devastating act of violence that claimed the lives of her entire immediate family. On June 11, 2016, Idaleigh, her mother, and her three older sisters were found deceased inside their home. The discovery was made by concerned family members who went to check on them after being unable to reach them by phone.
Upon their arrival, they made the heartbreaking discovery of the five victims.
The investigation into the horrific scene quickly identified the suspect as Juan David Villegas-Hernandez, the husband of Cynthia Villegas and the father of the four girls: Yamilen, 14, Cynthia Janet, 10, Abigayl, 7, and little Idaleigh. Authorities determined that each of the victims had been fatally shot in the head. The motive for this familial tragedy appeared to stem from the fact that Cynthia Villegas had recently asked for a divorce, a development that preceded the killings.
In the immediate aftermath of the murders, Juan David Villegas-Hernandez fled to his native Mexico. However, he was apprehended by Mexican authorities just a day after the discovery of the bodies and was subsequently extradited back to the United States to face justice. During the investigation, police found a chilling message written on a door inside the home that read, "Forgive me. I apologize to all. I will kill myself too.”
During his trial, in a sudden turn of events, Villegas-Hernandez changed his plea to no-contest on five counts of first-degree murder. This admission of guilt brought the court proceedings to an abrupt end. He was subsequently sentenced to five life sentences for the murders of his wife and four young daughters, ensuring he would spend the remainder of his life in prison for the annihilation of his family.
