On a Friday afternoon in Albuquerque, New Mexico, a Hispanic male named Elijah Pino, 42, found his life cut tragically short. The incident unfolded on September 30, 2022, at a bus stop located at the intersection of Wyoming and Central Avenue SE. That day, officers were called to the scene in reference to a shooting and discovered Pino on the ground, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Investigations into the homicide revealed a confrontation that preceded the fatal shots.
According to a criminal complaint, surveillance footage captured the moments leading up to the shooting. The footage allegedly shows a man, later identified as 37-year-old Henry Atkinson, getting off a bus with four other people and approaching Pino. An altercation then broke out among the group.
During the fight, a woman was reportedly taunting Pino. It was at this point that Atkinson is alleged to have shot Pino multiple times. After the shooting, Atkinson allegedly threw the victim to the ground before walking away from the scene. The catalyst for the initial confrontation remains unclear.
Following an investigation by the Albuquerque Police Department, Henry Atkinson was identified as the suspect. He was arrested on October 21, 2022, and subsequently charged with an open count of murder for his alleged role in Elijah Pino's death. Atkinson was then booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center.
