On August 18, 2005, Richard W. Smith, Jr., a 46-year-old officer of the Albuquerque Police Department (APD), lost his life in the line of duty. He was shot and killed along with his colleague, Officer Michael R. King, while they were attempting to take a man into custody for a mental health evaluation.
