On a late Sunday morning in Albuquerque, New Mexico, a dispute over stolen property escalated into a fatal encounter for 40-year-old Isidro Omar Ramirez, a Hispanic male. The events of January 19, 2025, began to unfold around 11:00 AM when Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched following a report of a stolen vehicle. A caller informed dispatch that he was following his brother's stolen excavator, which was being towed by a white Ford F-250.
The pursuit came to a
crashing halt near 201 Prosperity Avenue SE, where the F-250, which was also determined to be stolen, collided with another vehicle. When deputies arrived at the scene, they found Ramirez in the driver's seat of the stolen truck, unconscious and suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Despite attempts at life-saving measures by the deputies, Isidro Omar Ramirez was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators located a revolver in Ramirez's waistband.
At the scene of the crash, authorities detained Miguel Varela, the brother of the man who had initially reported the stolen excavator. According to the criminal complaint, Varela had confronted Ramirez about the stolen equipment. Varela stated to investigators that he believed Ramirez was reaching for a weapon and, in a moment of panic, he fired multiple shots at Ramirez as he attempted to flee in the stolen truck. Evidence recovered at the scene included several spent. 45 caliber casings near Prince Street SE and Prosperity Avenue SE, as well as a 1911-style handgun found on the hood of a nearby Chevrolet Silverado.
Following the on-scene investigation and questioning, Miguel Varela was arrested and taken into custody. He was subsequently booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center and charged with second-degree murder. The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit has taken over the ongoing investigation into the shooting. Multiple individuals who were present at the scene were also detained for further questioning as authorities work to piece together the complete sequence of events that led to the deadly confrontation.
