On April 2, 2018, the life of 15-year-old Hispanic male, Carlos Rodriguez, was tragically cut short in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The day began like many others, with Carlos joining his friends at a mobile home. The gathering, however, took a dark turn over a dispute concerning a small sum of money. Another teenager, Brandon Cabelleros, confronted Carlos about a $40 debt that was owed to him.
The situation quickly escalated when Carlos explained that he did not have the money to repay the
loan at that moment. In response to this, Cabelleros produced a. 45-caliber handgun and shot Rodriguez in the chest. The sudden act of violence left the group in shock. In an attempt to conceal the crime, Cabelleros and some of the others present moved Carlos's body to the entrance of the mobile home park.
Despite their efforts, medical help was sought, and Carlos was rushed to a local hospital. Unfortunately, the single gunshot wound proved to be fatal, and he succumbed to his injuries a short time after arriving. The community was left to mourn the loss of a young man known for his ability to make others smile, his life taken over a minor financial disagreement.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Albuquerque police began their investigation. After detaining several individuals at the scene and conducting interviews, detectives arrested Brandon Cabelleros. He was charged with murder and tampering with evidence in connection with the death of his friend. Reports from the time indicated that Cabelleros would be tried as an adult for the killing.
