On December 5, 2016, a tragic event occurred in Albuquerque, New Mexico, resulting in the deaths of three young children: Ian Matthew Mascarenas, Olivia Renee Mascarenas, and Elijah 'Eli' Ray Mascarenas. Ian, who was 9 years old at the time of his death, was a fourth-grader at Manzano Mesa Elementary School. He was known for his exceptional academic abilities, particularly in math and reading, and had a passion for baseball and guitar, which he enjoyed learning alongside his father, Joshua
Mascarenas.
The incident that led to the deaths of Ian and his siblings was a murder-suicide. The children's father, Joshua Mascarenas, was identified as the perpetrator. On that fateful day, Joshua Mascarenas took the lives of his three children before taking his own life.
