Randy Lovett, age 40, was one of three victims in a tragic triple homicide that occurred in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on August 31, 2023. The incident took place in the early morning hours, around 4:30 a.m., in an apartment parking lot located at 305 Rhode Island St., S.E., in an area known locally as the 'International War Zone'.
Lovett was found shot alongside two other victims: Jonathan McGaughy, 31, and Genea Oliver, 35.
While McGaughy and Oliver were pronounced dead at the scene, Lovett was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The Albuquerque Police Department quickly responded to the scene after officers heard gunshots while responding to a nearby traffic crash. The department's ShotSpotter system also detected the gunfire, helping to pinpoint the location.
Following the incident, police arrested Thomas Clark Jr., 32, in connection with the shootings. Clark was initially detained on an outstanding felony warrant after officers found him hiding on the roof of a nearby building. During subsequent questioning by homicide detectives, Clark admitted to shooting the victims.
According to Clark's statement to the police, he was in a car with McGaughy and two others when they drove to the apartment complex. Clark claimed he was afraid the others wanted to kill him due to rumors about him stealing items. He stated that he 'snuck' a handgun into his waistband and, feeling panicked, fired at the victims.
Clark's account suggests that he shot McGaughy first, then fired at Oliver through the car window. He also admitted to possibly shooting Lovett, who was reportedly leaning into the car window during the altercation.
Following his confession, Thomas Clark Jr. was booked into the Metro Detention Center. He faces charges including three open counts of murder in the first degree, shooting at or from a motor vehicle, and tampering with evidence.
This tragic event has shocked the Albuquerque community and highlighted ongoing concerns about gun violence in the area. The case is expected to proceed through the New Mexico court system in the coming months.
