On a Halloween night in 2021 that was meant for celebration, a tragedy unfolded in the South Valley of Albuquerque, New Mexico, ending the life of 22-year-old John Michael Casados. The evening of October 31st took a dark turn at a house party attended by numerous people, many of whom knew each other from high school. The festive atmosphere was shattered when a group of uninvited men, their faces obscured by hoodies and masks, arrived at the gathering.
The unwelcome presence of these
individuals quickly led to conflict. Witnesses reported that after looking around at specific people, a physical altercation broke out. The confrontation rapidly escalated to gunfire. One witness recalled hearing someone exclaim, "Hey let's stop the party let's shoot this up," just before the shots rang out. Investigators believe the suspects may have learned about the party through social media and decided to show up uninvited.
In the chaotic aftermath, John Michael Casados was found fatally wounded. Another young man, 18-year-old Alejandro Xavier Villarreal-Mathes, also lost his life in the shooting, and several other partygoers sustained injuries. When Bernalillo County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered a grim tableau of Halloween decorations intermingled with the evidence of violence, including multiple shell casings. One victim was found motionless in the front yard, and another lay inside the house.
As of late 2021, the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office was actively investigating the double homicide and seeking credible information from the public to identify the suspects responsible for the deadly shooting. Despite the passage of time, there have been no publicly announced arrests, and the identities of the suspects remain unknown. The case continues to be an open investigation, leaving a community to grapple with the senseless violence that cut short the lives of two young men.
