In the late autumn of 1985, a tragedy unfolded in the city of Springfield, Massachusetts, forever marking November 12th as a day of somber remembrance. Michael Schiavina, a 28-year-old White male, was a dedicated police officer serving his community. On that fateful Tuesday, he was on patrol with his partner, Officer Alain Beauregard, when they approached a vehicle occupied by two men.
In a sudden and violent turn of events, one of the men in the car opened fire on the unsuspecting officers.
The gunman, identified as Eddie Ortiz, had an outstanding warrant and chose to resist arrest with deadly force. Officer Schiavina was struck in the chest by the gunfire and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His partner, Officer Beauregard, was also critically wounded, having been shot in the head. He tragically passed away from his injuries three days later. The brazen attack sent shockwaves through the Springfield community and left the police department mourning the loss of two of its own.
In the aftermath of the shooting, a manhunt ensued for the two brothers. As law enforcement closed in on a home where he was hiding, Eddie Ortiz took his own life. His brother, Juan Ortiz, who was present in the vehicle during the shooting, was apprehended by authorities. While the evidence indicated that Eddie Ortiz was the sole shooter, Juan Ortiz was charged and ultimately convicted of two counts of second-degree murder under a theory of felony murder. He was sentenced to life in prison for his role in the deaths of the two officers. After serving many years of his sentence, Juan Ortiz was eventually granted parole.
