In the summer of 2007, the life of 17-year-old Jose Michael Fred Gurley, a Black male from Brockton, Massachusetts, was tragically cut short. On July 21, the promising young athlete was fatally shot, a violent end to a life that held much potential. The incident plunged his family and the wider community into a period of grief and a long quest for justice.
The investigation into Gurley's death led authorities to a suspect, Andre Brewer.
For years, the case progressed through the legal system. In early 2011, court records indicated that the murder charge against Brewer was still pending in Brockton Superior Court. It wasn't until February 2014 that the trial for the man accused of killing the teenage football star was scheduled to commence, bringing a renewed focus on the nearly seven-year-old case.
The trial proceeded, and in March 2014, a jury found Andre Brewer guilty of murder in the second degree. In addition to the murder conviction, Brewer was also found guilty of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of a loaded firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition. Following the verdict, Brewer appealed his conviction, but the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court affirmed the jury's findings, solidifying the legal conclusion to the tragic death of Jose Michael Fred Gurley.
