In the winter of 2014, a violent encounter in Lynn, Massachusetts, tragically ended the life of 29-year-old Hery Aquino. On the afternoon of January 12th, within the Curwin Circle Housing Project, a dispute escalated to a fatal degree. Aquino sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was rushed to a Boston hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries that night.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect, 18-year-old Jacquan McKenzie of Lynn.
Shortly after the incident, police apprehended McKenzie, initially charging him with trespassing and firearm possession. As the investigation progressed, authorities formally charged McKenzie with the murder of Hery Aquino. He was subsequently held without bail.
In January 2017, the legal proceedings in the case came to a close. Jacquan McKenzie, then 21, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter in Salem Superior Court. In addition to the manslaughter charge, McKenzie also pleaded guilty to various firearms and assault charges. As a result of his plea, he was sentenced to serve 12 to 15 years in state prison, to be followed by five years of probation.
