In the early morning hours of November 29, 2014, in Lynn, Massachusetts, a violent encounter cut short the life of 35-year-old Omar Ortiz-Lopez. He was fatally shot in the head outside the Harbor View Apartments on Sagamore Street in an act that would lead investigators on a years-long pursuit of justice. Ortiz-Lopez, a Lynn resident, was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving behind a community in shock and a family grappling with a sudden and tragic loss.
The investigation into the
murder quickly identified a suspect: Hector Diaz Emiliano, a man from Lowell who also used the alias Nelson J. Rodriguez Figueroa. Evidence presented in court would later prove that Emiliano was the individual who shot Ortiz-Lopez. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, however, Emiliano managed to evade capture by fleeing the country, initiating an international manhunt. The search for Emiliano would continue for more than three years.
The tireless efforts of law enforcement, including the Massachusetts State Police, Lynn Police, and U.S. Marshals, eventually led to a breakthrough in the case. In January of 2018, Hector Diaz Emiliano was apprehended in Puerto Rico and brought back to the United States to face charges for the murder of Omar Ortiz-Lopez. Following a 10-day trial in Salem Superior Court, a jury found Emiliano guilty of first-degree murder and carrying a firearm without a license. In November 2021, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
