On January 25, 2016, the Springfield Police Department responded to a report of a gunshot victim at 38 Brookline Avenue in Springfield, Massachusetts. Upon arrival, officers found the victim, Juan A. Zayas, a 71-year-old man, who was pronounced deceased at the scene. Zayas, born in Caguas, Puerto Rico, to Francisco Zayas and Maria Concepcion Ortiz, was the father of a Massachusetts State Trooper, which elevated the case to a high-profile status.
