On the final night of 2017, as the city of Lawrence, Massachusetts, prepared to welcome the new year, a tragedy unfolded that marked the city's 11th homicide of the year. Jeffrie Santana Peguero, a 22-year-old male, was fatally shot on New Year's Eve. The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. in the vicinity of 170 Reservoir Street. Responding to reports of a homicide, Lawrence Police discovered Santana-Peguero inside a minivan, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Santana Peguero was born and educated in Bani, Dominican Republic. In 2014, he moved to Lawrence, where he was working as a sales clerk at Emmanuel Market on Park Street. His family remembered him as a caring individual, particularly fond of his young cousin, and someone with a strong work ethic who often volunteered for extra shifts. He was known to be saving money to support his sisters who remained in the Dominican Republic.
The investigation into the shooting death of Jeffrie Santana-Peguero led to an arrest in January 2018. Lawrence Police, in conjunction with Essex State Police Detectives and the Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, took 49-year-old Jose Urena into custody. Urena, a resident of Lawrence, was arrested at his home on Warwick Street without incident and was subsequently expected to be arraigned on a murder charge in Lawrence District Court.
