In the early hours of Christmas Eve 2023, a festive night out turned into a tragedy for Edward Javier-Perez, a 29-year-old Hispanic male from Lawrence, Massachusetts. Inside the bustling Energy Lounge on Broadway, an altercation shattered the holiday spirit. At approximately 12:20 a.m., shortly after another man entered the nightclub, a dispute erupted between him and Javier-Perez.
The confrontation escalated with terrifying speed when the man drew a handgun and fired a single shot at Javier-Perez from close range.
Panic and chaos ensued as the gunman fled the scene, leaving Javier-Perez critically wounded. First responders and police rushed to the nightclub, where they found him suffering from a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to Lawrence General Hospital, but his injury proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead. The incident cast a dark shadow over the community, prompting an immediate and intensive investigation by Lawrence police, the Massachusetts State Police, and the Essex County District Attorney's Office. The Energy Lounge was also temporarily shut down due to public safety concerns following the deadly shooting.
The investigation swiftly identified 27-year-old Franklin M. Laras as the alleged shooter. An arrest warrant was issued, charging him with murder and firearms violations. However, Laras had vanished, managing to evade capture for nearly nine months. His flight from justice led authorities to place him on the Massachusetts State Police's Most Wanted list, describing him as armed and dangerous. The manhunt crossed international borders when it was discovered that Laras had fled the United States.
A collaborative effort between multiple law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Marshals Service, the U.S. Attorney's Office, and law enforcement officials in Mexico, eventually tracked Laras to Mexico City. He was apprehended and extradited back to Massachusetts to face the charges against him. In September 2024, Franklin M. Laras was arraigned in Salem Superior Court for the murder of Edward Javier-Perez. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was ordered to be held without bail pending further court proceedings.
