On the night of March 17, 2023, a violent encounter in Lawrence, Massachusetts, tragically ended the life of 24-year-old Hispanic male, Christopher Garcia. Just before midnight, the Lawrence Police Department was flooded with 911 calls reporting gunfire and a man down near 216 Walnut Street. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Garcia suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
He was rushed to Lawrence General Hospital, but sadly, was pronounced dead.
Christopher, known affectionately as "Bebo," was a young father to a two-year-old and a four-month-old. According to his sister, on the night of the incident, Garcia was being followed by two men while his girlfriend and their two small children were in the car with him. The family has been left in complete shock, remembering him as a devoted and loving father, son, and friend.
The investigation into the shooting was a joint effort by the Essex County District Attorney's Office State Police Detective Unit and Lawrence Police detectives. Their work led to the arrest of 26-year-old Hector Raul Aybar-Soto of Lawrence, who was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Garcia's death.
Ultimately, Hector Raul Aybar Soto was found guilty by an Essex County Superior Court jury for the fatal shooting. The deadly confrontation reportedly stemmed from a minor traffic dispute, after which Aybar Soto followed Garcia to the Walnut Street address and shot him. A judge sentenced Aybar Soto to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 20 years.
