A festive Saturday night birthday party in Lawrence, Massachusetts took a tragic turn in the early morning hours of Sunday, April 30, 2023, ending in the death of 18-year-old Desiderio Arias. A Hispanic male, Arias was attending the gathering at a third-floor apartment on Royal Street when gunfire erupted around 3 a.m. The chaos of that moment left a devastating toll, with Arias and five other individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.

Responding to a disturbance call, Lawrence Police discovered the bloody scene and the six victims. All were rushed to Lawrence General Hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Desiderio Arias was pronounced dead at the hospital. Two of the other victims sustained injuries so severe that they were later airlifted to hospitals in Boston for more advanced treatment. Authorities have stated that based on their initial investigation, the shooting does not appear to have been a random act of violence.

In the aftermath of the deadly shooting, an investigation was launched by the Essex County District Attorney's Office State Police Detective Unit and Lawrence Police detectives. This led to the arrest of two men who were also among the six individuals shot at the party. Saul Enrique Morales Espinosa, 22, and Joshual Ramirez, 20, both residents of Lawrence, were taken into custody. They were not charged with murder, but rather with felony counts of carrying a firearm without a license and carrying a loaded firearm. Both men pleaded not guilty to the charges during a remote arraignment while they were still hospitalized for their injuries. They were held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing.
