In the early morning hours of March 1, 2020, tragedy struck on the streets of Lawrence, Massachusetts. Alan Jimenez, a 23-year-old Black / African American male, was fatally shot while sitting in the driver's seat of a car near the intersection of Market and Loring Streets. The incident, which occurred shortly before 4 a.m., also left a 19-year-old female passenger with devastating injuries.
While Jimenez was pronounced dead at the scene, the young woman was rushed to a Boston hospital and survived, but was left paralyzed from the attack.
For more than two and a half years, the case remained a focus for both the Lawrence Police and Massachusetts State Police. Their persistent investigation eventually led to a significant breakthrough. In September 2022, an Essex County Grand Jury handed down an indictment against Elias Leger, who was 20 years old at the time of his arraignment. Leger, who was already incarcerated on unrelated charges at MCI-Shirley, was charged with murder, armed assault with intent to murder, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
Following the indictment, Leger was arraigned in Salem Superior Court where he pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him. Despite his plea, a judge ordered him to be held without bail. The arrest marked a pivotal moment in a long and arduous investigation, bringing a measure of hope for justice to the family and friends of Alan Jimenez and the surviving victim who suffered life-altering injuries.
