On the evening of December 10, 2018, Gregory Phillips, a 25-year-old Black / African American male, was fatally shot in the Mattapan neighborhood of Boston. The incident occurred at approximately 9:59 p.m. outside of 155 Savannah Avenue, where Phillips was found inside a vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to identify Marcus Ambrosio as a suspect.
Surveillance footage from the area captured two males, one later identified as Ambrosio, exiting a van and walking towards Phillips's car. The footage showed the two individuals walking out of the camera's view, at which point multiple shots were fired into Phillips's vehicle. After the initial gunfire, Ambrosio and the second individual were seen running back to their van. They then drove by Phillips's car and fired several more shots into it before fleeing the scene.
In November of 2019, a significant break in the case came when Massachusetts State Police recovered two firearms under the Fellsway Bridge in Somerville. Ballistic analysis confirmed that these were the weapons used in Gregory Phillips's murder. Further investigation, including cell phone tower records, placed Marcus Ambrosio in the vicinity of the Fellsway Bridge on the night of December 12, 2018, just two days after the shooting.
Following his arrest, Marcus Ambrosio was charged with the murder of Gregory Phillips. In April 2023, Ambrosio, then 28, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and firearm offenses. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years. The identity of the second male involved in the shooting has not been publicly released.
