On a Wednesday afternoon, September 8, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the calm in Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood. Arthur Rashaad Miles, a 34-year-old Black / African American man, was sitting in his parked car outside his apartment on Washington Street when the attack occurred. A masked individual approached the vehicle and fired multiple shots, fatally wounding him. Despite his injuries, Miles managed to exit his car and run across the street before collapsing on the sidewalk.
First responders rushed him to a local hospital, but he was pronounced dead.
The shooter fled the scene on foot, running up School Street and then down Dixwell Street. An investigation into the brazen daylight shooting led authorities to identify 32-year-old Saquon Moore as the primary suspect. Investigators tracked Moore to Prince George's County, Maryland, where he was apprehended on November 17, 2021. He was subsequently extradited back to Massachusetts to face charges of murder and firearm violations in connection with Miles's death.
Moore was no stranger to law enforcement, having a significant criminal history. In 2003, at the age of 14, he was involved in a shooting in Roxbury that left a teenager paralyzed. He was tried as an adult and convicted, serving 14 years in state prison. Shortly after his release, he was involved in drug dealing in Vermont, leading to a federal prison sentence. He had been released from federal custody in 2020, not long before the fatal shooting of Arthur Rashaad Miles.
