A teenager is murdered at Memorial Stadium On Christmas Eve of 2016, a young Hispanic male named Luis Fernando Orellana-Ruano, aged 18, was lured to his death at Memorial Stadium in East Boston. The son of Guatemalan coffee farmers, Orellana-Ruano had faced a difficult start in life, moving between relatives and foster homes. Despite a rebellious youth, he was reportedly trying to turn his life around through a Cambridge program called YouthBuild, where he was learning to repair motorcycles.
Unfortunately, his aspirations were cut short in a brutal act of violence.
The murder was orchestrated by members of the MS-13 gang who mistakenly believed Orellana-Ruano was associated with a rival gang. For months, gang leaders, including those in El Salvador, discussed plans to kill him. On the night of December 24th, he was brought to the public soccer stadium where members of two MS-13 cliques, Huntington and Sykos, were waiting. They attacked him, stabbing him more than a dozen times in his back, chest, and neck. His throat was also slashed, and he was left at the bottom of a stairwell.
For several years, the murder remained unsolved. Although initially considered a person of interest, Henri "Perverso" Salvador Gutierrez, a Salvadoran national and MS-13 member, denied any involvement, and authorities lacked sufficient evidence to press charges. The case broke open years later when Gutierrez, incarcerated on an unrelated gun charge, boasted about the killing to another inmate who was a cooperating federal witness. This confession provided investigators with the evidence needed to connect him to the crime.
Ultimately, Henri Salvador Gutierrez pleaded guilty to his role in the murder of Orellana-Ruano, as well as the 2018 killing of another teenager in Lynn. In February 2022, a federal judge sentenced Gutierrez to life in prison. Another MS-13 member, Yanez Cruz, was also implicated in the planning of Orellana-Ruano's murder and was present at the scene to ensure the attack was carried out. Following the murder, Cruz reportedly used the violent act to recruit new members into the gang.
