On a spring evening in Boston, a life was tragically cut short in a hail of gunfire. Bihlal Bell, a 31-year-old man, was in the Orchard Park neighborhood of Roxbury on April 11, 2022, when violence erupted. At approximately 5:46 p.m., police responded to calls for a person shot in the area of 50 Orchard Park. Upon their arrival, they discovered Bell suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was ultimately pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting painted a grim picture of the events that transpired. Authorities stated that Bell was a passenger in a vehicle when another car, driven by a man later identified as James Morale, began to follow him. As they neared a playground in Orchard Park, Morale allegedly drove up alongside, lowered his window, and began firing at Bell. In an attempt to escape the assault, Bell exited his vehicle and fled into a baseball field. Surveillance footage of the incident reportedly showed both Bell and Morale firing weapons simultaneously during the confrontation.
For nearly a year, the case remained under investigation as authorities worked to identify a suspect. A break in the case came on March 23, 2023. Officers conducting a routine traffic stop for a motor vehicle infraction discovered that the driver, 26-year-old James Morale of Boston, had an outstanding warrant for murder in connection with Bell's death. Morale was taken into custody without incident.
Following his arrest, James Morale was indicted by a Grand Jury and faced charges of murder and multiple firearm offenses. He was subsequently arraigned in Suffolk Superior Court and ordered to be held without bail.
