In the late hours of a summer Saturday in Boston, the life of 28-year-old Dion Ruiz, a Black male, was cut short by gunfire. On August 13, 2022, at approximately 10 p.m., police responded to a ShotSpotter activation on West Dedham Street in the city's South End neighborhood. There, they found Ruiz unresponsive, suffering from two gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Boston Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
In the wake of his death, family remembered him as a loving man and a cherished friend who was always willing to help others. His mother, Wanda Miller, spoke of his infectious smile and the warmth of his hugs, while his sister lamented the sudden loss of her younger brother, who was also a father to an eight-year-old daughter.
The investigation into Dion Ruiz's death led to a break in the case months later. In December 2022, 24-year-old Alexander Nunez of New Bedford turned himself in to authorities after a grand jury indicted him on a charge of second-degree murder. According to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office, Nunez had been at a birthday party on West Dedham Street on the night of the shooting. He allegedly left the party and drove his car to the intersection of West Dedham Street and the Villa Victoria housing complex. Leaving his car idling, Nunez walked into the complex's parking lot.
The events that followed unfolded in a matter of moments. As Nunez was walking back to his vehicle, Dion Ruiz ran out from the entry area of the housing complex, holding a pistol. As Ruiz ran past him, Nunez allegedly pulled a 9mm pistol from a fanny pack and fired five shots, striking Ruiz twice in the back. Authorities have stated that Ruiz did not fire his weapon. Following his arraignment in Suffolk Superior Court, Alexander Nunez was ordered to be held without bail.
