In the rugged terrain of Wild Horse Valley, about 35 miles south of Burns, Oregon, a tragic event unfolded on October 4, 1903. Special Deputy Sheriff Jack West of the Harney County Sheriff's Office, a male lawman, was on a mission to apprehend a wanted fugitive. Accompanied by Special Deputy John Saxton, West had tracked a burglary suspect to the ranch house of Charles Fields.
