On New Year's Day in 2017, the life of 25-year-old Tyler Matthew Balais, a White male, was cut short in Klamath Falls, Oregon. The day that should have been filled with resolutions and new beginnings turned into one of tragedy and loss. Balais, who was remembered as a best friend and a beloved son, worked on a Hot Shot Fire Crew and had a passion for dirt bikes and skating.
The events that led to his death began on New Year's Eve.
Balais and his girlfriend, Kassandra Imbert, had been out at a downtown bar where they had been drinking and got into an argument. The conflict continued after they returned home. During the course of their dispute, Balais threatened to take his own life. A struggle over a gun ensued, and the weapon discharged. Balais sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
In the subsequent legal proceedings, differing accounts of Imbert's character were presented. Balais's mother testified that Imbert had previously struck her with a wine bottle. In contrast, a former sheriff's deputy who had encountered Imbert in jail described her as having a tender heart. Ultimately, the judge in the case stated that alcohol was the primary factor in the tragic incident.
Kassandra Imbert pleaded no contest to a charge of negligently causing Tyler Balais's death. As a result of her plea, she was sentenced to probation. No other individuals were implicated or arrested in connection with the shooting. The case concluded with the legal system determining that the death was a result of negligence exacerbated by alcohol consumption rather than intentional malice.
