On April 15, 2023, Reserve Corporal Joseph Johnson of the Nyssa Police Department in Oregon was fatally shot while conducting a traffic stop. Johnson, 43, was responding to a report of a violent individual damaging property and threatening occupants at a residence in Nyssa. During his response, he learned that the suspect, identified as Rene Castro, had fled the scene in a vehicle.
