In the early morning hours of July 5, 2014, a tragic and violent incident cut short the life of 26-year-old Hahrahcio Roy Branch, a Black male, in Portland, Oregon. The events unfolded in the parking lot of Soobie's Bar & Grill, a strip club in Southeast Portland. A dispute that began inside the club spilled out into the parking lot, escalating into a chaotic scene of gunfire. Branch was caught in the ensuing violence and sustained fatal injuries.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to his wounds.
The shooting, which occurred shortly after 3 a.m., resulted in injuries to four other individuals, though their wounds were not life-threatening. The incident was quickly determined to be gang-related, adding a layer of complexity and concern for law enforcement. In the immediate aftermath, police began a thorough investigation, seeking to identify and apprehend the person or persons responsible for the death of Branch and the injuries to the other victims.
The investigation led to the arrest of Lavell Thomas. He was charged in connection with the deadly shooting. In the course of the legal proceedings, Thomas either pleaded guilty to or was convicted of manslaughter in the death of Hahrahcio Roy Branch. For his role in the violent encounter that left one man dead and four others wounded, Thomas was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
