In the small town of Fort Klamath, Oregon, a popular and respected lawman's life was cut short on a summer evening. City Marshal John Wesley Lambert, a 57-year-old man, was known for his dedication to keeping the peace. On August 7, 1911, this dedication would cost him his life.
The night in question found Marshal Lambert responding to a disturbance at a local saloon. Two men, under the influence of alcohol, were causing a commotion. Lambert, in the course of his duties, attempted to arrest the disruptive pair. In a sudden and violent turn of events, one of the men produced a gun and shot the Marshal. Despite his fatal wound, Lambert managed to draw his own weapon and return fire, injuring both of his assailants.
The two men were subsequently taken into custody and faced legal consequences for their actions. They were both charged with manslaughter in the death of the city marshal. John Wesley Lambert was survived by his daughter, two brothers, and his parents. His death was a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who wore a badge in the Old West, even as it was beginning to fade into history.
