William Clement Marks, a 23-year-old homeless man, was one of the victims of Douglas Franklin Wright, a serial killer who terrorized Oregon between 1969 and 1991. Marks' death occurred in October 1991, along with two other homeless men, Anthony Arthur Barker and William Ray Davis, all of whom were lured to their deaths by Wright under the pretense of offering them work.
Douglas Franklin Wright, born on March 25, 1940, was a cunning and ruthless individual who exploited the vulnerability
of homeless men. In October 1991, Wright advertised work to homeless men in Portland, promising them $10 an hour to clear brush at a youth camp. Marks, along with Barker and Davis, fell prey to this deception. Wright drove them to a remote area on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation, where he bought them food and offered them alcohol. Once they were intoxicated, Wright fatally shot each of them in the head with a pistol.
The events leading to Wright's capture were precipitated by another victim, Randy Scott Henry, who managed to escape after Wright shot and killed Anthony Shawn 'Tony' Nelson on October 20, 1991. Henry jumped out of the car and ran to the highway, where he eventually returned to Portland and alerted the police. With Henry's and another witness's help, the police were able to locate and apprehend Wright.
Wright was subsequently convicted of the aggravated murders of Barker, Marks, and Davis in June 1993. He was sentenced to death on October 11, 1993, for these crimes. Notably, Wright was also linked to the murder of Nelson, but due to Nelson being a Makah Indian and the crime occurring on an Indian reservation, Wright would have had to be tried in a federal court under the Major Crimes Act. However, Wright waived his appeals and requested to be executed, which expedited his death sentence.
Wright's execution by lethal injection took place on September 6, 1996, at the Oregon State Penitentiary, marking the first execution in Oregon since 1962 and the state's first post-Gregg execution. Before his execution, Wright confessed to additional crimes, including the abduction, molestation, and murder of 10-year-old Luke Tredway in 1984, a case that had remained unsolved until Wright's admission.
