In the early hours of July 26, 2003, the hum of traffic on Interstate 205 in Portland, Oregon, was shattered by the sound of gunfire. Robert Lee Thompson, Jr., a 23-year-old African-American man, was driving his red Impala south near the Glisan Street exit when a dark-colored Volkswagen Jetta began to pursue him.
