On October 12, 2003, at approximately 8:45 p.m., Cameron Brandice Ware, a 22-year-old resident of Portland, Oregon, was fatally shot in front of his mother's house located in the 5800 Block of NE 18th Avenue. The incident occurred as Ware was standing outside his car in the driveway. Several neighbors reported hearing between five to eight gunshots, which prompted immediate responses from those in the vicinity.
Ware's mother, who was inside the residence when the shots were fired, rushed
to the porch and found her son lying on the ground near his vehicle. She also witnessed a suspect fleeing the scene. The suspect was described as a dark-complected male in his early 20s, approximately 5'3' with a medium build, wearing a tan hooded sweatshirt with blue, square shapes on it. Upon noticing Ware's mother, the suspect ran off southbound on NE 18th Avenue towards Jarrett Street.
Emergency medical personnel were quickly summoned to the scene, and Ware was transported to Legacy Emanuel Hospital & Health Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy confirmed that Ware died from multiple gunshot wounds.
Additional witnesses provided crucial details about the events surrounding the shooting. Neighbors on NE 17th Avenue, who heard the gunshots, reported seeing a medium-sized black two-door vehicle, possibly a Toyota, racing away from the area northbound on NE 17th Avenue. This vehicle did not stop at the stop sign on NE Ainsworth and continued northbound.
Despite the detailed descriptions of the suspect and the vehicle, as of the current date, no arrests have been made in connection with Cameron Brandice Ware's murder. The case remains unsolved and is classified as a cold case by the Portland Police Bureau. The Cold Case Homicide Unit continues to seek information from the public, offering cash rewards of up to $2,500 for tips that could lead to an arrest.
