On a spring day in Portland, Oregon, 10-year-old Luke Tredway, a Caucasian male, left a friend's house on May 23, 1984, for the short walk home. It was a journey he would never complete. When he didn't arrive, his mother, who was pregnant at the time, grew worried and contacted the police. An extensive search involving law enforcement and bloodhounds traced the boy's path to an intersection, where it was believed he either got into a vehicle or onto a bus.
For years, his disappearance remained a mystery, his face appearing on milk cartons across the country in the hopes of generating leads.
The case remained cold for over a decade until 1996, when a chilling confession brought a devastating answer to the long-unanswered questions. Douglas Franklin Wright, a convicted serial killer already on death row for other murders, admitted to abducting, molesting, and killing Luke Tredway. In a letter to a newspaper just a week before his own execution, Wright provided a grim narrative of the boy's final hours.
According to his confession, Wright was "hunting for boys" when he spotted Luke and snatched him off the street. He held the boy captive in his apartment for approximately 36 hours before shooting him six times in the head on May 25, 1984. Wright claimed he buried Luke's body under some brush in a remote area near Mount Hood. Despite a search of the area, the boy's remains were never recovered. Authorities, however, believe Wright's confession to be credible.
Douglas Franklin Wright was a violent criminal with a history of murder. In 1970, he had killed a woman and her mother. In 1991, he murdered three homeless men he had lured with false promises of work. Having dropped all his appeals for the 1991 murders, Wright was executed by lethal injection in September 1996, shortly after confessing to the murder of Luke Tredway. While his confession brought a resolution to the case, it offered little solace to a family who never had the chance to bring their son home for a proper burial.
