On a summer night in Portland, Oregon, a life was tragically cut short, leaving a family heartbroken and a community searching for answers. Leonard James "L.J." Irving, a 34-year-old male, was shot and killed in the early morning hours of Sunday, June 26, 2011. The fatal encounter unfolded near Northeast 82nd Avenue and Thompson Street following a disturbance.
Irving was reportedly attempting to act as a peacemaker, trying to calm an angry situation and protect his nephew during a fight when gunfire erupted. An autopsy later confirmed that he died from multiple gunshot wounds.
The violence of that night also left two other men wounded. One man was seriously injured with a gunshot wound to the neck, while another suffered a gunshot wound to the forearm. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the investigation into Irving's death began, but for years, his family waited for justice as the case remained unsolved. His mother, Lucy Mashia, spoke of the immense grief her family endured and expressed frustration with what she described as a "code of silence" in the community that she believed was hindering the police investigation.
The path to holding someone accountable for Irving's death has been long and complex. In the initial investigation, a man named Isaiah Eric Mandley Jr. was arrested and accused of the murder. However, a significant development came more than a decade later. On January 25, 2023, a Multnomah County Grand Jury indicted another man, Jawuan M. Polk, for the murder of Leonard James Irving. Polk was charged with Murder in the Second Degree and Attempted Murder in the First Degree. At the time of the indictment, Polk was already in custody on unrelated charges. The indictment of a new suspect many years after the initial arrest added another layer to the protracted quest for justice for Irving and his family.
