In the early morning hours of July 12, 2015, a fatal encounter in a Northeast Portland mobile home park claimed the life of 35-year-old Brandon Kaufman. The male victim died from a gunshot wound in what authorities believe was the escalation of a verbal argument. The incident unfolded around 12:29 a.m. near Northeast 72nd Avenue and Northeast Killingsworth Street.
Responding to the sound of a gunshot, North Precinct officers who were in the vicinity quickly detained a man seen running
from the area. Shortly after, a call came in reporting a shooting at a nearby trailer park. Arriving at the scene, officers discovered Kaufman deceased. Witnesses later reported that Kaufman was killed while defending a woman.
The man detained by police was taken into custody in connection with the homicide. Authorities did not immediately release his name, stating that he was receiving medical treatment for a possible drug overdose and would be formally taken into custody once he was medically stable. Homicide detectives and the police gang team were involved in the subsequent investigation.
