In the early morning hours of September 13, 2015, the life of 34-year-old Alonzo Miami S. Gregg, a Black / African American male, was tragically cut short on a street in Hillsboro, Oregon. Originally from South Carolina, Gregg had been living in various locations across Washington and Multnomah counties. In the moments before 3:30 a.m., witnesses reported hearing gunshots near Southeast Baseline Street and Southeast 11th Avenue.
Responding officers discovered Gregg in the middle of the street, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He died at the scene.
Witnesses saw a suspect flee on foot heading northbound on Baseline Street after Gregg fell to the ground. Despite the deployment of a K-9 unit, the suspect was not immediately found. The investigation into Gregg's death pointed towards an acquaintance, Andrew Guy Moret. Three days after the shooting, detectives from the Hillsboro Police Department arrested the 51-year-old Moret in Portland without incident. He was subsequently charged with murder and unlawful use of a weapon.
The motive for the killing remained unclear as the case proceeded through the legal system. Moret's journey to trial was complicated by issues regarding his mental fitness. At one point, he was deemed unfit to stand trial and was sent to the Oregon State Hospital for treatment. After being declared competent, Moret's trial eventually commenced. During the trial, Moret, who chose to represent himself, claimed that he had acted in self-defense. In February 2019, a Washington County jury convicted Andrew Guy Moret of murder and unlawful use of a weapon for the shooting death of Alonzo Sentel Gregg nearly four years earlier.
