Rebecka was a recent graduate of South Umpqua High School, having completed her education just a few months prior to the incident. She had just begun her college career and had also started a new job, demonstrating her enthusiasm and dedication to her future.
Carnes was studying in the healthcare field, a pursuit that aligned with her compassionate nature and hard work ethic. Her family and friends described her as a 'beautiful spirit' who was well thought of by everyone who knew her. She was an active member of her community, having played softball and earned scholarships to support her education.
The shooting occurred in Classroom 15 of Snyder Hall, where English and writing classes were conducted. The perpetrator, identified as Christopher Sean Harper-Mercer, 26, was a student in the writing class. Harper-Mercer entered the classroom at approximately 10:38 a.m. PDT and began his rampage. He fired a warning shot in the hallway before forcing students to the center of the classroom. Witnesses reported that he deliberately spared one student's life, instructing him to deliver a package to the police and to sit at the back of the classroom and watch as the shooting continued. Harper-Mercer used two handguns, a Glock 19 and a Taurus PT24/7, and targeted students indiscriminately, although some reports suggest he asked victims about their religion before shooting them.
Harper-Mercer was described by law enforcement sources as a 'hate-filled' individual with anti-religion and white supremacist leanings, who had long struggled with mental health issues. He was armed with six legally purchased guns, extra ammunition, and wore body armor during the attack. In addition to the weapons found at the scene, seven more were discovered in his apartment, totaling 13 firearms linked to him. Harper-Mercer's actions resulted in the deaths of nine people, including Rebecka Ann Carnes, and injured eight others before he was killed in a gunfight with sheriff's deputies.
Rebecka's death was deeply felt by her family and community. She was the niece of an area paramedic and a relative of U.S. Sen.
