In the small community of Lookingglass, southwest of Roseburg, Oregon, a quiet Tuesday evening in November was shattered by a tragic event that would claim the lives of three family members. On November 7, 2017, 10-year-old female Payshience Melonie Rose "Tia" Adams was killed in her home. Her life, along with those of her foster mother and another sibling, was cut short in an act of violence that sent ripples through the community.
That evening, Robert Adams returned to his home around
9 p.m. to a deeply unsettling scene. His 16-year-old foster son, Kevin Adams, was waiting for him outside and urged him to call the police and not to enter the house. Despite the warning, Robert Adams went inside. There, he discovered a handgun on his bed and the deceased bodies of his wife, 55-year-old Donya Adams, his 26-year-old daughter, Amory Adams, and young Payshience.
When Douglas County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the residence, Kevin Adams surrendered to them without any resistance. He informed the deputies that the weapon used was inside the house. During the subsequent investigation, the teenager reportedly told investigators that he had shot his relatives multiple times with a handgun. After the shootings, he waited for his foster father to come home.
Kevin Adams was taken into custody and booked into a juvenile detention facility on three counts of aggravated murder. The motive for the devastating act was not immediately made public. The community was left to mourn the loss of three of its members, including a young girl described as sweet, playful, and kind.
