Jason Dale Johnson, a 33-year-old individual, lost his life in the tragic 2015 Umpqua Community College shooting that occurred on October 1, 2015, in Roseburg, Oregon. This devastating event was part of a larger mass shooting incident that took place on the campus of Umpqua Community College.
The perpetrator of the shooting was Christopher Sean 'Chris' Harper-Mercer, a 26-year-old student who was enrolled at the college.
Harper-Mercer carried out the attack in Snyder Hall, specifically targeting Classroom 15 where English and writing classes were being conducted. At approximately 10:38 a.m. PDT, the first 9-1-1 call was made, reporting gunfire from the classroom. Harper-Mercer, armed with two handguns – a Glock 19 and a Taurus PT24/7 – entered the hallway and fired a warning shot before forcing students into the center of the classroom. He then began shooting at the students, deliberately sparing one student to deliver a package to the police and forcing this student to witness the carnage from the back of the classroom.
Harper-Mercer's actions resulted in the deaths of nine people, including Jason Dale Johnson, along with eight other students and an assistant professor. Eight additional students were injured in the shooting. The victims who lost their lives included Lucero Alcaraz, Treven Taylor Anspach, Rebecka Ann Carnes, Quinn Glen Cooper, Kim Saltmarsh Dietz, Lucas Eibel, Lawrence Levine, and Sarena Dawn Moore, in addition to Jason Dale Johnson.
The response to the shooting was swift, with Roseburg Police Sergeant Joe Kaney and Detective Todd Spingath, who were in plainclothes at the time, arriving at the scene just six minutes after the first 9-1-1 call. They engaged Harper-Mercer in a brief shootout, during which he was hit once in the right side by the officers. After retreating into the classroom, the wounded Harper-Mercer took his own life by shooting himself in the head.
There were no arrests made in this case, as the perpetrator, Christopher Sean Harper-Mercer, died by his own hand at the scene. The investigation and subsequent reports focused on understanding the motivations behind Harper-Mercer's actions, which were attributed to his feelings of revenge for perceived sexual and social rejection.
In the aftermath of the shooting, there was a significant outpouring of support for the victims and their families. For instance, a GoFundMe account set up for one of the injured students, Chris Mintz, received over $650,000 in donations to help cover his medical expenses. The community and authorities alike were deeply affected by the tragedy, with Oregon Governor Kate Brown expressing her heartbreak and commitment to improving on-campus safety.
