On May 4, 2001, Pinal County Sheriff's Deputy Jason Patrick Lopez, a 26-year-old male, was shot and killed near Casa Grande, Arizona. He was attempting to serve a felony warrant when the encounter turned violent. The suspect resisted arrest, drew a handgun, and shot Deputy Lopez in the throat and arm. Despite his life-threatening injuries, Lopez managed to make his way back to his patrol car to radio for help.
The suspect fled the scene, leading responding officers on a running gun
battle during which he was wounded. The gunman then took a hostage in a nearby residence, initiating a lengthy standoff with law enforcement. After several hours, the hostage was able to escape, and the suspect surrendered to authorities nine hours after the initial shooting.
Following the incident, the suspect was arrested and put on trial. On October 8, 2003, he was found guilty of first-degree murder for the death of Deputy Lopez. Deputy Lopez had served with the Pinal County Sheriff's Office for six years, with 18 months as a sworn deputy. He was survived by his wife and two young children.
