On May 4, 2001, Pinal County Sheriff's Deputy Jason Patrick Lopez, a 26-year-old male, was shot and killed near Casa Grande, Arizona. He was attempting to serve a felony warrant when the encounter turned violent. The suspect resisted arrest, drew a handgun, and shot Deputy Lopez in the throat and arm. Despite his life-threatening injuries, Lopez managed to make his way back to his patrol car to radio for help.
