Hommy Vega, a 36-year-old Chicago resident, was killed on November 27, 2015, during a violent incident in the West Garfield Park neighborhood. Vega was shot in a predominantly African American neighborhood on the city's crime-ridden West Side. The shooting took place during a turbulent weekend when widespread protests were ongoing in Chicago. Protesters were blocking Michigan Avenue as part of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, and the city was experiencing elevated tensions.
