In the early hours of November 7, 2017, the life of 21-year-old Diego Tejeda-Manzo was cut short in a fatal shooting near the bustling campus of Portland State University. Witnesses later recounted hearing the sounds of a dispute moments before a gunshot rang out in the night. The incident unfolded just after 1 a.m. in front of a Subway restaurant located at 1717 SW Park Ave.
Responding to the reports, officers from both the Portland Police Bureau and Portland State University Public
Safety arrived to find Tejeda-Manzo gravely wounded. Despite their immediate efforts to provide medical assistance, his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy conducted by the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office would later confirm that Tejeda-Manzo died as a result of a gunshot wound in an act of homicidal violence.
In the wake of the shooting, an investigation led to the apprehension of two individuals. Nineteen-year-old Nicholas L. Hannan was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder. Another man, 26-year-old David Brown, was also arrested and faced a charge of assault in connection with the incident. Both men were booked into the Multnomah County Jail as the legal process began to address the violent end to a young life.
